Joe Newman, Owner

Joe is a dynamic professional who has navigated two distinct yet remarkable careers. With a degree in criminal justice from Michigan State University, Joe started a career in law enforcement. Commencing as a dedicated police officer, he ascended through the ranks as a Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant, and ultimately, as Commander of the Battle Creek Police Department.

Following a distinguished tenure in law enforcement, Joe transitioned to pursuing his other passions: carpentry and homebuilding. Leveraging his expertise and commitment to excellence, Joe established Newman Construction, a family-owned enterprise devoted to crafting exceptional homes. From elegant starter residences to ambitious remodels and cutting-edge architectural projects, Joe’s portfolio epitomizes a dedication to superior craftsmanship.

Among his notable projects is the esteemed Stonegate subdivision in Battle Creek, alongside an array of new construction, lakefront dwellings, renovations, additions, and commercial ventures. Joe’s work has earned him numerous accolades, solidifying his reputation as a visionary in the construction realm. With a fusion of skill, ingenuity, and dedication, Joe continually reshapes the landscape of homebuilding, leaving an indelible mark on each project he undertakes.

Patty Newman, Owner

Patty has been a pillar of Newman Construction since its inception over 30 years ago. She brings her multifaceted expertise to the family business, overseeing critical functions. From project scheduling and material procurement to accounting and quality assurance, Patty’s attention to detail ensures that every aspect of the operation runs seamlessly.

In addition to managing project logistics and client relations, Patty maintains strong relationships with subcontractors. Her dedication extends beyond project completion, as she coordinates warranty, maintenance, and client service requests, ensuring satisfaction.

As the linchpin of the office, Patty orchestrates the work schedule for the entire field staff. With her wealth of experience and commitment to excellence, Patty continues to be a driving force behind Newman Construction’s continued success and reputation for unparalleled quality and service.

Paul Newman, Operations Manager

Paul’s extensive experience in the construction industry reflects both his technical expertise and leadership abilities. After graduating from the University of Olivet, he began his career in South Florida, overseeing concrete and steel structures of high-profile projects like the high rise building The Main in Fort Lauderdale, the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, The Boca Raton Resort, and Formula 1 Racetrack Miami International Autodrome among many others.

After moving to Maryland, Paul worked as a Superintendent for one of the country’s largest commercial contractors, overseeing healthcare projects in the Baltimore/DC region. His responsibilities included safety, scheduling, trade coordination, quality control, and all aspects of day-to-day operations, which provided him with a well-rounded understanding of construction management.

Returning back home to Battle Creek, Paul holds the role of Operations Manager in the family business. His goal is to grow the business while maintaining the standard of quality and craftsmanship that Newman Construction is known for. Paul oversees all projects from inception to completion, ensuring the business’s continued success for years to come.

Additionally, Paul’s commitment to the construction industry extends beyond his work at the family business. He serves on the Homebuilders Association of Western Michigan Board of Directors, advocating for legislation and economic initiatives that promote homeownership in the community. He also contributes to the Calhoun Area Career Center Construction Advisory Board, working to create opportunities for high school graduates to pursue careers in the trades.

Shaun Berkheiser, Business Manager

Shaun brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to Newman Construction. With 25 years in the medical device industry, Shaun has developed a broad knowledge base of business operations and leadership. As the Business Manager at Newman Construction, Shaun is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the company’s reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and quality, which has been built over 30 years. His focus on finances, business process improvement, and scheduling ensures that our operations run smoothly and efficiently. Shaun’s commitment to a client-first approach aligns perfectly with our values and mission, and his dedication to excellence and client satisfaction ensures that our tradition of quality craftsmanship continues to thrive.

Vicky Dunithan, Administrative Assistant

Vicky manages all administrative tasks for Newman Construction. With a background in working for a municipality, she brings valuable experience to her role. Her organizational skills help keep daily operations running smoothly, from managing communications to assisting with project documentation. Vicky’s steady contributions help ensure the smooth operation of Newman Construction.

Britney Fedricks, Interior Designer

Britney earned her interior design degree from Michigan State University before launching her own brand. She’s honed her craft over a decade, excelling in residential, event, and commercial design. Her style blends modern trends with timeless elements, creating comfortable and visually appealing spaces. Britney’s mission is to enrich lives through design, delivering tailored solutions that resonate with clients’ preferences. Proficient in 3D design, she collaborates with Newman Construction, maintaining their standard of excellence in design.

Shayna Niss, Senior Interior Designer

Shayna is an interior designer with over 13 years of experience creating beautiful, functional spaces. A Michigan State University graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, she has worked in both Chicago and Michigan on residential and hospitality projects. Shayna is passionate about blending beauty and comfort to create spaces people truly enjoy.

Sarah Bourke, Assistant Interior Designer

Sarah is our Assistant Interior Designer, and she will keep our projects on track and organized! Her passion for design and sweet personality contribute to her keen ability to build trusting relationships with our clients. Sarah’s favorite part of interior design work is adding layers to spaces with textures, wallpaper, furniture, and décor. When not designing, you can find Sarah enjoying the early mornings, decorating her home, and spending time with her family and friends!
